Key points
- Within the planning area, the values of greatest interest to WCS Canada are the resilience of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems to climate change and maintenance of ecosystem integrity and protection against further loss of biodiversity.
- In the context of land use planning across northern BC, these values are most effectively addressed with large, intact protected areas coordinated across multiple planning regions.
- We raise concerns that current planning efforts are being made to lower the barrier to entry for mineral extraction in northwestern BC.
- We also encourage the Province to use section 7 of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act, which explicitly addresses Free, Prior, and Informed Consent for industrial development.
