WCS Canada Comments: Draft 2025-2029 Northwest Territories Climate Change Action Plan

Our comments on the draft 2025-2029 Northwest Territories (NWT) Climate Change Action Plan, outlining the critical need for a greater focus on peatlands.
Key points
- A focus on peatlands is critical for NWT’s 2025-2029 Climate Change Action Plan. Continued disturbance and fragmentation of these landscapes will increase risks to meeting both biodiversity and greenhouse gas emissions targets.
- The essential role of forests and peatlands in climate mitigation and adaptation is not adequately reflected. We put forward specific suggestions to address these gaps.
- Where carbon offset programs are used, carbon offsets must be of a high standard and verified and monitored to ensure emissions reductions. Existing undisturbed forest and peatland (and other ecosystem type) carbon sinks cannot be used as offsets and must be maintained to ensure emissions reductions from offsets are effective.

Peatlands
Peatlands are the world's largest terrestrial carbon store - and 25% of peatlands are in Canada.
Forests, Peatlands & Climate Change
We envision a world where the vast and carbon-rich forests and peatlands of North America’s boreal and arctic remain ecologically intact.
