WCS Canada Comment: Environmental Impact Statement – Springpole Gold Project

Scrafford, M., Gobin, J. & Palmer, L.

Key points

The Project is proposed in a region that contains high-integrity forests valued for ecological integrity and that supports biodiversity and the mitigation of climate change.

Surveys by the project proponent have shown the importance of the area of the proposed site to boreal caribou and wolverines.

We anticipate additional effects from the project beyond those identified, due to increased commercial forestry operations and related infrastructure related to the proposed road extension to the mine site. Such effects are likely to have negative impacts on biodiversity (including caribou and wolverine) and climate change mitigation.

The analysis of potential effects, including cumulative effects, must be expanded to include effects related to the existing and proposed roads for travel to and from the proposed mine site, as well as anticipated new forestry roads and related activities in the region.
