Input for Canada’s 7th National Report to the Convention on Biological Diversity
KBA Canada Steering Committee
This submission includes our responses (in italics) to the three questions provided to inform the drafting of Canada’s 7th National Report to the Convention on Biological Diversity.
Key points
- KBAs provide a standardized, science-based tool for identifying the most important sites for biodiversity conservation across all ecosystems in Canada, enabling targeted action and progress monitoring across numerous KMGBF targets.
- The initiative's effectiveness stems from its inclusive, transparent, and expert-driven approach, which has mobilized a broad coalition and generated high-quality, accessible biodiversity data now being widely integrated into conservation planning and policy.
- Sustainable funding, long-term data infrastructure, and broader uptake across sectors are critical next steps to maximize KBAs’ contribution to biodiversity conservation, including through stewardship, monitoring, and integration into decision-making frameworks.
Abstract
Following the responses, we have included a table highlighting the relevance of Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) in Canada to selected targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
We are providing this input in our collective capacity as members of the KBA Canada Steering Committee (see: https://kbacanada.org/whos-involved/).
