Canadian Peatland Law and Policy Dataset
Goodday, V.
This dataset from WCS Canada's National Peatland Policy Project lists the provincial, territorial, and federal laws and policies that apply to peatlands.
Key points
- Acknowledging the global importance of Canada’s peatlands and international calls to establish national and sub-national policy frameworks for peatlands, there is the need to examine the applicable policy framework in Canada and to assess to what extent peatlands and their carbon services are addressed.
- In response to this need, we undertook a systematic review of Canadian law and policy to identify instruments with provisions directly applicable to peatlands. The purpose of the inquiry was, ultimately, to produce an evidence-base upon which future policy action can be taken for the improved protection and long-term stewardship of peatlands in Canada.
- We are now sharing the resulting dataset in the hopes that this data will be used by others to inform their own research, policymaking, or advocacy efforts.
- Our own analysis of study findings is described in our November 2024 policy brief, Assessing Peatland Law and Policy Across Canada: Is Canada Fulfilling Its Critical Stewardship Role?

Canadian policy failures putting globally important carbon-rich peatland ecosystems at risk, says new report
Policy frameworks across Canada are inadequate for ensuring the country’s carbon-rich peatlands are safeguarded, says a new report published today by Wildlife Conservation Society Canada.
